Bemerton Local History Society

Bemerton is on the western side of Salisbury (in the County of Wiltshire, UK) and is now thought of as a suburb of that city. However within living memory Bemerton was a separate thriving village community, and it has a rich history. George Herbert, the well-known religious poet, was rector of Bemerton from 1630 until his death in 1633, and he wrote much of his work here.

Bemerton Local History Group was set up in 2002, when it received a Millennium Award which enabled various projects to be initiated. In March 2004 we formally established the Bemerton Local History Society, and we are working on developing the following ideas Longer term we might publish a history, or even create a collection of materials and a permanent exhibition in a new Village Room... It's up to all of us living in the village!

Our publications to date include "Memories of the Hut: A community history of Lower Bemerton's Village Hall" (published January 2004) and "Bemerton in Wartime" (published April 2006). For further details and information on how to order these books please visit our Publications page.
